Press Bed Regrinding

Press Bed Regrinding

When your press bed requires regrinding to bring it back into specification, you don’t want to make an unplanned shutdown, with the cost and hassle, lost production and damaged reputations that go with it.

That’s why our in situ machining division specialises in saving you time and money by regrinding your press beds before their condition becomes critical and production suffers.

We do it around the world, in places such as China, Russia, Jordan, South Africa, France, Italy and Egypt as well as in the UK. Seven decades’ experience on hundreds of presses says we can regrind your press bed on site, wherever you are.

How can we save you time and money, and build your reputation for getting plant and equipment working again as fast as possible?

Faster press bed regrinds than ever

Do you remember the ‘bad old days’ of manual resurfacing? How long it took, the lost production as your presses stood idle, and the challenge of achieving tight working tolerances using traditional methods?

Nowadays, when quality control indicates that presses are wearing with use, it’s easy to schedule a preventative visit from our team before the condition of your press bed goes out of spec.

Accurate grinding precision

If you’re like our other customers requiring press bed regrinding, we’re sure you will come to trust the accurate results produced by our precision grinding machinery.

Our traversing grinding table quickly, cost-effectively, brings even a heavily worn press bed back into specification

Huge time savings; incredible accuracy

We can reinstate one surface on a press bed, such as an ECH-125, in around three shifts, depending on the amount of wear present. That’s a huge time difference when compared to the time the traditional manual method took to resurface the bed.

How accurate are we? How about restoring the flatness and parallelism with an upper ram to within 0.05mm on a lowerbed die of 1270mm x 760mm as we did for Carnaud Metal Box?

We support a diverse range of pressings companies making products as different as beverage cans and the huge injection moulding presses that produce automotive components. In a typical recent project, we achieved a superb result when we machined the vertical surface of an injection moulding press using our on-site CNC-controlled milling equipment.

Supporting major car makers since 1947

Since being established in 1947, we’ve supported all the major car manufacturers with extensive cold casting repairs on press tools and dies using the Metalock repair procedure. We also support car manufacturers with emergency repairs that reinstate manufacturing as quickly as possible and avoid the catastrophic consequences of lost production.

Planned maintenance and urgent repairs are all in a day’s work for Metalock. So is combining our services in a full package to repair cracked or broken components, accurately re-machine them in situ and achieve workshop-quality tolerances before machines are rebuilt. Few companies can offer service like that!

Supporting forging too

The global forging industry counts on us for repairs and maintenance too, World-renowned organisations such as Sheffield Forgemasters, Firth Rixson, GKN, Wyman & Gordon, Doncasters, Henry Williams, Alcoa, Thyssen-Krupp and many more rely on us to machine items such as bolsters, platens, rams, hydraulic cylinders and T slots.
